Cranbury is one of the oldest towns in New Jersey. As early as 1680, Settlers came from France,
England, Scotland, Holland, Germany, and Norway. March 1, 1698 is the first recorded evidence
of buildings on a deed of sale between Josia Prickett of Burlington and John Harrison for land
“with all improvements.” In addition, John Harrison received a license to buy more land from
the Lenape Indians, a Delaware tribe.
In the 18th century, traveling between New York City and Philadelphia took three days. Since
Cranbury was the midpoint between the two cities, it became a convenient stop for stagecoaches.
On the maps, in the 18th century the town’s name appeared as Cranberry and Cranberry Town.
In 1857, the name was changed to Cranbury. In 1869, the town and brook were renamed, as
well. On March 17, 1872 Cranbury Township was officially created and organized as a separate
political division of Middlesex County. Cranbury was entered on The New Jersey Register of
Historic Places on August 9, 1979 and on the National Register of Historic Places on September
At First Bank, we’re working hard to make you feel like you’re home when you’re banking with
us. We care about our neighbors - their financial security and their hopes and dreams. Like
family, we won’t always be perfect. But, our mistakes will be honest and our efforts to solve the
problem will be complete.
We understand that our brand of banking won’t be for everyone. Some people want branches all
over the world. Some people want a variety of non-bank products and services. Still, we know
many people want more than just transactions.
We are looking to create something special: a place where people feel welcome and respected; a place where people get treated fairly; and a place where people are valued.
Welcome Home to First Bank… Where our Neighbors Come First
